A city to get to know
Yangzhou lies in Jiangsu province, northwest of Shanghai, in the Yangtze River Delta. For Chinese families living overseas, a visit can make room for time together alongside seeing relatives in China. Let older generations share memories and children bring their questions. A garden, a street and a meal can reveal how culture remains part of everyday life.

Look closely, by the lake and in the garden
At Slender West Lake, winding water connects pavilions, bridges and garden views. At Geyuan Garden, bamboo and rockeries evoke the four seasons. Notice how a window frames a view, or look for seasonal clues in the stones. Exploring a Chinese garden can begin with the small details each person notices.

Canal streets and Huaiyang flavours
Dongguan Street reaches the old canal at its eastern end. The street and waterway reflect Yangzhou's history of trade. Walk at your own pace, noticing the shops, building fronts and canal, and talk about how people once travelled and exchanged goods. The city's history begins to take shape at street level.
Yangzhou is a cradle of Huaiyang cuisine, known for careful knife work, refined techniques and delicate flavours. Morning tea is also part of local life. Sit down together and talk about familiar tastes and different ways of preparing food, from tea snacks to shared dishes. Conversation around the table offers children another way to explore their cultural heritage.
